Highlights of Southern Laos

GDL-Champassak-4000-islands-1-24This excursion within the south of Laos takes you to the 4000 Islands for a boat ride to see the rare Irawaddy Mekong dolphins. Enjoy the beautiful Bolaven Plateau which is home to numerous waterfalls and fascinating ethnic villages!

Travelers heading to Cambodia can finish at the border town of Veunkham.

Day 1 : Pakse > Ban Lak 19 > Bolaven Plateau > Champassak

We depart from our Pakse office at 8:30am and head off towards the north west. Our first stop of the day is at Ban Lak 19 village where we shall see how the local people produce knives using traditional methods. Continuing onwards driving through tea and coffee plantation until arriving in the Bolaven Plateau, the plateau is home to many different ethnicities including the Mon-Khmer for whom it is their homeland. We continue onwards to the amazing Tad Fan and Tad Nngoung waterfalls which are a great spot for swimming and where we shall have lunch amongst the beautiful surroundings. After enjoying our lunch and taking some time to relax we visit the local market a Paksong which sells a great variety of produce and is a fascinating place to look around! Continuing onwards from the market we make our way to Tad Pasuem waterfall where we shall visit the many different local ethnicities including Laven, Ta oy and Aluk etc... After spending some time at the waterfall and visiting the different ethnic minorities we head to the town of Champassak which is where we shall spend the night in a local guesthouse.

Day2 : Champassak > Wat Phou > Ban Kiet Ngong > Ban Hat Xay Koun > Don Khone

We begin the day with an early start and visit the amazing UNESCO World heritage site of Wat Phou, we spend some time here exploring this stunning ancient site before returning back to our guesthouse for breakfast. After enjoying breakfast we drive to the village of Ban Kiet Ngong which is from where we shall begin our soft trek through the Xepian national biodiversity conservation area. Lunch will be served at the local restaurant, we continue taking a short transfer to Ban Hat Xay Koun which is from where we shall board our boat for the journey to Don Khone, along the way we will enjoy the sunset and see the local fishermen at work before arriving at Sala Donkhone just in time for dinner.

Approximately: 3.5 hours transfer, 45 minutes walking, 1.5 hour boat ride

Day 3 : Don Khone > Liphi Waterfall > Don Det > Don Khone

Day three is a relaxed day as after breakfast we take a leisurely bicycle ride to the old French wharf before cycling along the old French railway line to the stunning Liphi waterfall. We return for lunch at Seng Aloun riverside restaurant where we enjoy some delicious food amongst some beautiful surroundings. In the mid afternoon after our lunch and taking some time to relax we cycle to Don Det taking in the various sights along the way, from Don Det we take a boat back to Don Khone which is where we shall spend the night.

Approximately: 4-5 hours cycling, 1 hour walking, 1.5 hour boat ride

Day 4 : Don Khone > Nakasang > Veunkham > Khone Phen Waterfall > Pakse/Cambodian border

After breakfast we take a short 25 minutes boat ride to Nakasang, and from here take a minibus to Done Sadam where we board a boat for a one hour journey to an area where Irrawaddy dolphins can be spotted! We spend around two hours here looking for the dolphins before heading back to the Done Sadam. When we arrive back to short drive a 30 minutes to the Lao/Cambodian border to visit KhonphaPheng waterfall, the largest in South East Asia! We enjoy lunch here at the waterfall while enjoying the stunning views of the fall, before returning to Pakse or alternatively we can take you to the Lao/Cambodian border.
